PICTURE BOOK – (hardcover)
I realize that the popularity of poetry books for children is in decline but if you are to purchase just one this year I think this one should be it. Julie Fogliano’s skilled hand and Julie Morstad’s charming pictures bring the seasons to life in this gorgeous and comprehensive book of forty-eight short poems. Intimate, graceful verse and precise, bright illustrations evoke the ways that weather, water, sky, and growing things change throughout the year. The poet catalogs both the pleasures and acknowledges the boredom that comes with too much mud, rain, or winter.
Each poem is dated, as in a journal. Flowers blooming in sheets of snow make way for happy frogs dancing in the rain. Summer swims move over for autumn sweaters until the snow comes back again.
Delicate and precise, gracefully and economically expressed, the book is filled with the wonder of a genuine childhood experience.”
Reviewed by Dave Jenkinson. CM: Canadian Review of Materials, December, 2015 Highly Recommended “The gouache and pencil crayon illustrations of award-winning Julie Morstad effectively capture the content and mood of Fogliano’s poems. Morstad’s multi-racial cast of juvenile characters is delightful, but the artwork does “fight” somewhat with the poetry. While the poetry would appeal to a very wide audience, including adults, Morstad’s “child” characters would make the book appear to be too juvenile for older middle school or junior high students. However, teachers of these older grades might wish to have personal copies for read-aloud purposes.”
Kirkus Starred Review“This combination of poetry and art in praise of the familiar, natural world is sweetly, successfully dazzling.”
